Healthcare for International Students in the UK: Registering with the NHS

Understanding the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) is vital for international students. Here’s how to access healthcare and register with a GP (General Practitioner).

Registering with a GP

As an international student, you are generally eligible for NHS care. You’ll need to register with a local GP. Here’s how:

  • Find a GP: Use the NHS website or ask your university for a list of local GP surgeries.
  • Contact the Surgery: Call or visit the surgery to inquire about registration.
  • Complete the Registration Form: You’ll need to provide personal details and medical history.
  • Submit Documents: You’ll typically need your passport, visa, proof of address, and a letter from your university.
  • Key Resources

  • UKCISA – International Students’ Healthcare: A comprehensive resource covering healthcare access for international students. UKCISA Healthcare
  • NHS GP – Student Health Services: Some GP practices offer online registration. This is a general NHS GP portal with student-specific information. NHS GP Student Services
  • University Health Service Pages: Your university will likely have a dedicated page with information on healthcare for students. Search your university’s website for “student health services.”
  • Important Considerations

  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): If you applied for your visa after April 6, 2015, you likely paid an IHS, granting you access to NHS care.
  • EHIC: If you’re from a European country, bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).
  • NHS Services: The NHS provides a wide range of services, but some (e.g., dental care, eye care) may require separate payment or insurance.
  • Emergency Care

In case of an emergency, go to A&E (Accident & Emergency) or call 999.
